A Beginner’s Guide To Become A Developer

Can a person without any IT background become a Web Developer?

The answer for me is certainly “YES”. Let me break everything into pieces for you.
Originally being a linguist and a specialist in intercultural communications I never thought I could ever think about changing the main profession and, of course, as a result the life too.

I remember myself being fond of learning languages during my whole conscious life. Life is a quite interesting thing to live, and sometimes our expectations and the vision of the distant future can be absolutely different from the reality itself. This is exactly the thing that makes sense and makes us want to learn more, to test our abilities and limits. In a nutshell, makes us feel that the life is worth living.

As you already could understand I decided to change my profession to a completely new one.
At that time the only acceptable variant for me was a “web developer”. We are living in a century of IT technologies and every one of us has some kind of connection with it, especially the young generation. The tendency of IT industry is growing day by day, hour by hour and there is no way to escape from it. Besides, the fact of living in a county, which is famous for its high-quality IT specialists and developers, also somehow affected on my decision.

Starting a new thing, especially when having a completely different background is quite hard. But as long as we are inspired, interested or curious about something, I strongly believe we can achieve a lot.
The starting point of my journey to a new and some kind of “undiscovered” world for me has begun with basic HTML, CSS. After getting involved in this, I have decided to try to create a simple website.
Almost forgot to mention 🙂 as I have been learning foreign languages for years, I became very interested in the discovering cultures, traditions, national cuisine and, of course, traveling. As you could already guess, I decided to create a website about traveling by including all the above-mentioned culture components.

Being a beginner and create a website can sound a bit crazy for most of us, but I was stubborn and full of hope. Creating a brand new website with eye-catching design, especially when I did not have a single tag in the editor was something unreachable for me at that time. I remember myself, spending hours looking into a code to understand why my HTML code was not functioning. The answer could be very obvious (could have forgotten to put a comma or a quotation mark ) Hope you can imagine how time-consuming it was.

Finally, I found the thing that helped me out. It was WordPress platform.
To be completely honest i did not spend a long time trying to find the right one.
This was a love from the first sight. WordPress offers a very simple and intuitive design, user-friendly interface.

How to start working with WordPress?

The first thing we need to check is the admin page with its functionality (again, very simple and very easy to understand).
Before getting started, we can choose the theme we prefer. Although the theme can be changed anytime we wish. What is a theme? To be very short and clear, it is a container, where we can post our website content. WordPress offers countless amazing and extremely creative, well-designed themes, which will highlight the uniqueness of our websites.

WordPress additional features

In the WordPress dashboard, there is a section which is called “plugin”. Plugins are the most awesome things about WordPress. The plugin gives us an opportunity to have additional cool staff for our website. There are different types of gallery, slider, maps, forms plugins. Plugins which are responsible for the SEO, enhancing the security of the website, spam-blocking plugins, plugins for analytics (Tracking how and when users visit the site) etc.

Plugins, that I have used and can recommend

As I have mentioned above, I have decided to create a website about traveling which will include all the aspects of the culture. The main task for me was to find an appropriate plugin, which will display all the images I had in a proper way. I have also decided to find a Map plugin to display all the locations I was going to write content about on my website.

After checking a lot of plugins, I have installed Huge-IT Image Gallery and Google Maps plugins. I was taking into consideration the reliability of the plugin, its review and, of course, the support quality. The support was especially very important for me, as I was new in this sphere and would expect to have high-quality support.

Installation process

The installation process is very easy, all we need to do is to follow these steps:
Detect “Plugins” section from the admin page > add new search for “Huge-It Gallery” > Activate

After following these simple steps, the plugin is ready to be used.

We can now start uploading images to create a gallery for the website.
All we need to do is: go to admin page> detect the “Gallery” plugin > Add New Gallery> Add Image.

Note that we can upload the images both from the Media Library and form the PC. After uploading the images from the PC, the elements automatically appear in the Media Library (with the full description of the image: name, upload date, size, dimension, option to “Edit Image”).

The plugin offers us different view variants to choose the one that will be best for our website type.
The layouts are the following:

  • Gallery/Content-Popup
  • Content Slider
  • Lightbox Gallery
  • Slider
  • Thumbnails view
  • Justified
  • Blog Style Gallery
  • Elastic Grid
  • Gallery Albums

As the aim of the site is to inspire people to discover amazing places and to start traveling, I have chosen the “Elastic Grid” view. Elastic Grid organizes the images in the columns and rows with the same sizes. The quantity of the columns depends on the size we set and theme we use. If there are no widgets and sidebars on the website. (Note: before starting the creation of the website choose a theme having this in your mind).

This is how the Gallery would look like with Elastic Grid view.

The plugin has an option to set a hover effect by the navigation on the image. This is a cool option, as the users can check the title (in our case it is a sightseeing location) by navigating on it. The title appears with a thematic break line after it.

The next plugin I want to mention is the “Google Maps”.
There are a lot of websites about traveling which can give us an in info about everything. So this means that I needed something that would make my website more attractive and interesting.

I thought it would be a cool idea to combine two plugins and this is the result.

The “Google Maps” plugin offers an option to set markers to the certain locations (locations can be set both with a search engine by typing the location name, and with Latitude and Longitude).  In the image below we can check the marked location, the articles and the videos were about.

This option would offer users to check the locations the site offers information about. So in case, if the user is searching for info about a particular location, with the help of the markers they can check in advance whether there is an article,  image or a video, instead of checking the whole website with all the pages and subsections. This would be helpful and time-saving at the same time.

There is also a live preview for the Map project, so we see the back-end and the front-end of the page at the same time.

Huge-IT offers a lot of cool plugins with amazing tools. So, check them all and try to combine and create something very nice and attractive for your website.
Hope this article will somehow help and inspire you to go ahead and create cool projects.
